# helix update

> Update the Helix CLI and refresh installed agent skills

Update the Helix CLI to the latest version. Use `--v1` to update to `v2.3.5`, the last CLI release for v1 projects.

## Usage

```bash theme={null}
helix update [OPTIONS]
```

## Options

| `--v1` | Update to `v2.3.5`, the last CLI release for v1 projects. | Off |

## Behavior

* Downloads the release binary from GitHub and replaces the current one. Restart your terminal afterwards to use the new version.
* Updating from a pre-3.x CLI to 3.x prints a breaking-change warning first.
* If the [Helix agent skills](/cli/command-reference/skills) are installed, `helix update` also refreshes them to the latest version, even when the CLI is already up to date. A failure here degrades to a warning and never fails the CLI update.
* Separately, when skills are installed the CLI checks once every 24 hours whether they are out of date and prints a notice pointing you at `helix skills update`.
* Set `HELIX_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1` to opt out of both the CLI and skills checks. `HELIX_DISABLE_UPDATE_CHECK` works the same way.
* With `--json`, prints `{"version":"<version>","updated":true|false}`.

## Examples
